Several medicated stool softeners can be found at your local drug store. However, these chemically-formulated stool softeners can be harsh on the body, especially when used for a longer duration. 

Using a natural stool softener can help improve regularity without the worry of the adverse effects of synthetic stool softeners.

Instead of running to the drugstore for a quick-fix remedy, try these simple and natural stool softeners to relieve your discomfort.


Epsom Salt

This is an effective natural stool softener that works in two ways to relieve constipation.

  • It contains magnesium sulfate, which draws water into the colon, helping to make stool moist and soft.

  • The extra water creates a propelling action to push stool through and out the colon.

Dissolve two teaspoons of Epsom salt in one glass of water or fruit juice and drink. Results may be seen within 1 to 6 hours.

Do not use if you are pregnant or have kidney disease unless approved by your doctor. 


Prunes/Prune Juice

This is time approved remedy for constipation. It is for both children and the elderly.

  • Prune juice contains sorbitol, which has a tendency to pull in water as it passes through the intestines, resulting in a soft, easy to pass stool.

  • It is rich in fiber and works as a natural fiber laxative to absorb water and help soften stool.

Be careful not to take too much. Sorbitol can cause bloating, flatulence and diarrhea. The standard dose is to eat 5-7 prunes or one glass of prune juice morning and evening for effective results.


Legumes

Legumes provide a nutritious way to promote digestive health and relieve constipation. Rich in proteins and carbohydrates, legumes also provide good amount of soluble and insoluble fiber.

Fiber adds bulk to stool and helps to hold in moisture. This contributes to smooth and soft stools. So go ahead, include some peas, lentils and beans in your diet.


Flaxseeds

Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, flaxseeds work in multiple ways to relieve constipation.

  • It is a natural stool softener that helps to hold water in the stool, making it softer.

  • It contains a high amount of fiber, which helps to add bulk to stool. Bulk is needed to stimulate peristalsis.

Use a coffee grinder to mill a tablespoon or two of flaxseeds, then either stir it into water and drink, or sprinkle it over your food. Results are usually seen in six to eight hours. For best results, drink plenty of water throughout the day. 


Psyllium Husk

Derived from gel-coated seeds of an herb called Plantago ovate, Psyllium husk is a commonly used home remedy to soften stools.

Dissolve a teaspoon of psyllium husk in a glass of water and drink.
