Flaxseed oil for constipation

So, what about colon health?  Can flaxseed oil be equally effective against the evil of constipation?

While the actual flaxseed is a wonderful source of fiber for properly formed stool, flaxseed oil is well known for its constipation relieving properties.

  • Full of anti-oxidant power, constipation flax oil soaks into the intestinal walls to strengthen their function.

  • Constipation flax oil coats the stool, smoothing it out for quicker passage through the colon.

  • Constipation flax oil coats the intestinal wall to help stool move more effectively down, through and out.

In a laboratory study, flaxseed oil increased the number of bowel movements by 30%.

Ways to take flaxseed oil

Perhaps you’re interested in trying flaxseed oil for constipation relief, but not sure how to start. Here is a quick guide.

  • Flaxseed oil can be purchased at most local grocery stores.

  • For optimal health benefits, look for the words “cold pressed” on the bottle.

  • Flaxseed oil has a nutty flavor, and tastes somewhat like wheat germ. It has a sensation similar to that of melted butter and goes great in most breakfast foods.

For constipation relief,
try any of the following

  • Measure out 1-2 tablespoons and swallow it

  • Use in smoothies or as an oily dip for bread

  • Mix 1-2 tablespoons with eight ounces of water and some sprits of lemon juice. (Lemon juice is also a great agent for constipation relief)

  • Add 1-2 tablespoons to oatmeal, soups, hot veggies, or even baked goods for added flavor (Heating flaxseed oil will not harm its wondrous effects).

Warnings

Flaxseed oil does not have a long shelf life. Unless refrigerated, it will go rancid within just a few days time.

If tightly sealed and refrigerated, flaxseed oil can stay good for up to six weeks.

Make sure and keep it out of direct sun light.

Flaxseed oil is not recommended for pregnant women or anyone suffering with bipolar disorder.

When using flaxseed oil for constipation purposes, monitor how much you use. Go easy at first to see how your system reacts to a lower dose. If it produces diarrhea, lower the dose and try again.

Consider ground flax seed

If you have a coffee grinder, you can grind 1 to 2 ounces of flax seed in about 15 seconds, and sprinkle it on your cereal.

  • The flax hull is high in constipation busting fiber, plus has health benefits all its own

  • Whole flax seed has a much longer shelf life than flax seed oil

  • Research suggests it is a more effective remedy for constipation than just flax seed oil

Editor’s note:

Personally, I mill 2 ounces of flax seed, put
it in a cereal bowl, add water, stir, and drink.

The taste reminds me of Cream of Wheat, which I
frequently had for breakfast when I was growing up.
